How it's calculated
Days = end date − start date (+ 1 when the end date is included)
Years and months are counted on the calendar, then the remaining days. Leap years are included automatically.
Assumptions
- Dates are calendar dates; times of day and time zones are not used.
- By default the start date is counted and the end date is not, like counting nights.
Worked example
From 1 January 2026 to 31 January 2026 is 30 days, or 31 days when the end date is included.
Questions
Should I include the end date?
Include it when both days count, such as the length of an event or a leave period. Leave it out for durations such as nights of a stay.
What if the end date is before the start date?
The dates are swapped and the time between them is shown.
Are working days counted?
No. This counts every calendar day, including weekends and public holidays.
